Rent the Runway Lets You Borrow Their Clothes

Celebrities get to borrow clothes all the time, but us mere mortals are SOL unless we have a sister to steal from or a really nice friend who happens to wear the same dress size. But new site Rent the Runway has taken a page from Bag, Borrow or Steal's playbook and is renting designer clothes over the internet. Renting a bag never made sense to us, because who wants a bag for just a few days? But a dress is a bit of a different story, because it's totally conceivable that a person would want a dress just for one party and then, despite their best intentions, never get around to wearing it again.

Rent the Runway only rents womenswear so far, and the designers currently available include Alice and Olivia, Badgley Mischka, Brian Reyes, Christian Siriano, Catherine Malandrino, Diane von Furstenberg, Doo Ri, Giambattista Valli, Helmut Lang, Hervé Leger, Just Cavalli, Lela Rose, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Proenza Schouler, Richard Chai, and Yigal Azrouël. The blue Proenza Schouler pictured above is a clear standout.

To rent a dress for four days costs from $50-200, usually about ten percent of the dress' retail price, and you can keep it for eight days for an additional fee. They stock sizes from 0-10, and the first time you order a dress from a certain designer you can borrow a second size for free, just in case it fits differently than you expected. New Yorkers can get same-day delivery in case of emergencies. The site lets you search by size, color, designer, style, or the type of event you're going to, like an office party, black-tie affair, or "sorority dinner," for which the site recommends an orange Hervé Leger bandage dress. (Don't pick that one. We know enough sorority girls to know what will make them talk behind your back, namely Hervé Leger and oxygen.)

  1. WearTodayGoneTomorrow.com has been doing this for almost a year! WTGT loans nationally at 5 - 10% retail values, has had amazing reviews from Teen Vogue, People, InStyle, The Today Show and many more. Items arrive in 2 - 3 days, and they carry over 125 of the top designers including 3.1 Phillip Lim, Herve Leger, Matthew Williamson and more. They're amazing!
